In Nepal, agricultural production is low and so too is farm family income. One factor limiting production on small farms is access to and control of water for irrigation. Family members must often carry water by hand, sometimes over long distances. Crops dependent on hand irrigation usually produce substantially lower yields, reducing family nutrition and income. Opportunities exist for farmers to earn more by growing the high value crops consumers demand, but they must have access to the water those crops require.
