Benjamin Caldwell, Winrock’s Director of Forestry & Natural Resource Management, is a forest scientist, entrepreneur, and manager with nearly two decades of experience designing and implementing investments in natural resource management. He has experience leading and managing projects in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and North America, and joins Winrock after serving as Planted Forests Officer at the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization headquarters in Rome. Caldwell is a former Secretary of the International Commission on Poplars and Other Fast-Growing Trees Sustaining People and the Environment, a treaty-based organization of 38 member countries that advise national governments on forestry. He was Chief of Party for USAID India’s Partnership for Land Use Science (Forest-PLUS) project, Deputy Chief of Party on USAID ProLand based in Washington, D.C., and project manager on USAID activities focused on building sustainable and productive landscapes in Malawi. Caldwell has extensive experience in sustainable management and conservation of forests including technical design, implementation, validation and verification of REDD+ projects in Kenya, Congo, Colombia, and California, and has authored two Verified Carbon Standard-validated methodologies for carbon finance. He holds a doctorate in environmental science, policy and management as well as a master’s in forestry from the University of California, Berkeley.
