ART is a global initiative that seeks to incentivize countries to enhance carbon stocks through forest protection and restoration – a process known as REDD+ – by providing access to carbon market financing.
ART’s standard for the measurement, monitoring, reporting and verification of reductions and removals from the forest sector — The REDD+ Environmental Excellence Standard, known as TREES — represents the next step in the evolution of global efforts to protect and restore tropical forests.
By enhancing transparency, credibility and integrity, ART aims to unlock large-scale solutions from forests to achieve the ambitious global climate goals in the Paris Agreement.
What we do
ART oversees the registration and verification of carbon emission reductions and removals for countries and large scale jurisdictions that reduce deforestation and restore forests following requirements in TREES. ART issues offset credits on a transparent registry system. Each offset represents the reduction or removal from the atmosphere equivalent to one metric tonne of carbon dioxide.
ART brands the premium verified emissions reductions (VERs) issued against TREES as TREES Credits. Each TREES Credit represents the reduction or removal from the atmosphere equivalent to one metric tonne of carbon dioxide.
International Civil Aviation Organization and Global Voluntary Carbon Markets
TREES Credits are approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for use by airlines to meet requirements of ICAO’s regulated global carbon market, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
TREES Credits are also eligible for use in the global voluntary market for corporations to use towards carbon neutral and netzero targets.
Robust Registry System
ART operates a robust and secure electronic registry system, powered by APX, to record the issuance and retirement of serialized TREES Credits. The use of a fully transparent registry system is fundamental to the credibility of the market. ART ensures transparency by requiring that REDD+ Program registration and verification documents be made public. We ensure no double counting or double selling by serializing offsets and by linking to online offset issuance and retirement logs.
