USAID Central Asia Exposure features: “Keeping Barno’s Family Together”
The USAID Safe Migration in Central Asia activity, which works with host governments and local NGOs to prevent human trafficking and promote safe migration, was featured in a USAID Central Asia Exposure piece published on Feb. 22, 2023.
“Keeping Barno’s Family Together: USAID supports migrants’ families” tells the story of Barno Yakubova, a small business owner in Uzbekistan who sells cream and yogurt in her community, but struggled to cover basic costs of living for herself and two sons.
“Barno considered joining her husband to look for better job opportunities even though migrating to Russia meant risking her safety and leaving her two sons. Barno learned about USAID-funded support available for labor migrants’ families who remain back home,” the story explains.
With help from USAID, she “expanded her business and is now able to financially support her family.”
