USAID Features Winrock’s Safe Migration in Central Asia Program
USAID and Winrock are helping migrants navigate the pandemic by providing legal and psychological assistance online
The USAID Publications’ Exposure story “One Call Can Make A Difference” highlights USAID and Winrock’s work to help stranded migrants access legal resources and return home.
Madina, a migrant from Kyrgyzstan, was stranded in Russia during COVID-19, unaware of her rights. Thanks to resources made available by USAID, she was able to fight for her rights and safely return to her family in Bishkek.
In 2019, nearly 730,000 Kyrgyz migrants lived and worked in Russia and many are now struggling due to COVID-19. USAID’s Safe Migration in Central Asia program, implemented by Winrock, posted information about helplines, lawyers, and consular services for migrants on popular Central Asian websites and promoted these services in both Russian and Kyrgyz languages on Instagram and Facebook.⠀⠀
