Winrock Resilience Investment Screen (WinRes)
WinRes Overview
The Winrock Resilience Investment Screen (WinRes) was created in late 2017 via a collaboration between the global development non-profit Winrock International and the global social impact firm Acumen. In keeping with both Winrock International and Acumen’s objectives, WinRes was designed to assess how specific investments increase the resilience of communities to climate change. In order to be immediately useful and leverage current innovations in the field, WinRes uses the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Results Measurement Framework, particularly the Adaptation Impact Indicators, as a foundation. By employing this screen, the user can identify investments that are not only resilient to risks but also create resilience benefits for communities. WinRes is designed to focus on projects in irrigation and drainage, crops and land management, value chains, market access, livestock, rural transport, storage and processing, and non-farm incomes.
WinRes Components
WinRes is an in-depth assessment that captures:
- Climate change and weather risks to the business model in its target location and how the business activity addresses these risks
- Climate vulnerability of the target population and how the business model addresses those vulnerabilities by building the climate resilience of the community
- Any potential negative impacts of the investment under consideration that would exacerbate climate risks that could outweigh or dilute benefits identified in the previous two sections
WinRes Impact
The output of WinRes enables users to either recommend that the project has ‘Insufficient Resilience Benefit’ or that it has ‘Low/Medium/High Resilience Benefit.’ The tool also summarizes any climate risks generated by the project that have not been mitigated. Our intent is for WinRes to increase:
- The magnitude of resilience products and services
delivered to the poor - The quantity of climate resilience projects funded
- The number of investors funding climate resilience
- The magnitude
