Promoting integrated pest management for tomato production in Senegal

Location: Senegal

Assignment Number: EFAT006

Volunteers Requested: 1

Recruiter: | |

Winrock International is implementing the Enabling Farmers for Agricultural Transformation (EFAT) project, funded by USAID. The project aims to strengthen agricultural extension and advisory services and systems (EAS) to increase agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers and help them diversify their livelihoods and strengthen their resilience to adverse climate conditions.

EFAT works with public and private sector agricultural service providers organized into “extension delivery hubs” in three regions of Senegal to develop their capacity to form effective partnerships with other service providers. This will allow them to provide inclusive, demand-driven advisory and complementary services to smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth. The hubs, located in the Senegal River Valley, the Kaffrine region, and the Niayes, focus on selected value chains such as irrigated rice, pearl millet and tomatoes., respectively. The project also aims to improve the capacity of EAS providers to support climate-smart agriculture (CSA).

EFAT is seeking the support of a volunteer to train farmer extensionists that work with an extension delivery hub in the Niayes region of Senegal on integrated pest management for tomato. This assignment involves field travel to carry out activities.

The training will help farmer extensionists appreciate IPM concepts, acquire   skills to establish and manage tomato IPM demonstrations and promote IPM practices among a wider population of farmers.

Experience and Qualifications:

The volunteer should have the following qualifications and background:

·       At least a Master’s degree in agronomy, horticulture or general agriculture

·       5 or more years’ experience on integrated pest management in horticulture

·       Prior experience training smallholder farmers in Africa.

·       Fluency or professional proficiency in French highly preferred.
