Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in Market Gardening
Location: Koba-Boffa, Guinea
Assignment Number: GUI330
Volunteers Requested: 1
Recruiter: Jennifer Robinson | Jennifer.Robinson@winrock.org |
Winrock International is seeking a Farmer-to-Farmer (F2F) volunteer for a 15-day assignment (including travel) in Koba-Boffa, Guinea. The volunteer will partner with COJDAGUI (Cooperative of Youth for Guinean Agriculture Development – Cooperative des Jeunes Pour le Développement Agricole de Guinée) to address critical gaps in agricultural knowledge and practices, particularly in market gardening and rice production.
COJDAGUI is currently hindered by significant challenges, including limited access to quality training and resources, low awareness of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) benefits, difficulty obtaining quality seeds and fertilizers, and water scarcity during the dry season, compounded by high input costs. These barriers have limited their productivity and market potential.
The volunteer will deliver
training to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to:
· Understand and implement the core principles of GAP,
emphasizing environmental sustainability and responsible farm management.
· Improve product quality and market access by adopting
best agriculture practices.
· Apply sustainable soil management techniques, such as
crop rotation, organic fertilization, and composting, to enhance and maintain
soil fertility.
· Identify and manage common pests and diseases in market gardening using environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions.
Volunteer Qualifications
and Background
The ideal candidate should have:
· A bachelor’s or master’s degree in agriculture,
horticulture, agronomy, or a related field to provide a robust theoretical
foundation.
· At least 3–5 years of hands-on experience in market
gardening or small-scale, sustainable vegetable or fruit production.
· Advanced knowledge of modern farming technologies such
as drip irrigation, greenhouse cultivation, organic pest control, and other
innovative techniques relevant to market gardening.
· Previous experience working in developing countries,
preferably West Africa, to navigate the local agricultural and cultural context
effectively.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills; French
language proficiency is preferred but not required (a translator will be
available).
· A capacity to evaluate training outcomes and provide
constructive feedback on successes and challenges.
· Physical readiness to travel to the host site in
Toudnifily, located approximately 165 miles (265 kilometers) from
Conakry, where the training will occur.
