Agroecological Farming Techniques

Winrock International is offering a unique opportunity for a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer to significantly impact the lives of Dambal orchard farmers in Djilor Sine, Fatick region, Senegal. This 18-day assignment, including travel, will involve training the farmers in agroecology. The focus areas include:
• Soil structure and fertility improvement
• Use of natural fertilizers
• Good farming practices
• Agriculture-livestock integration to control pests and diseases sustainably
• Water use, management, and conservation techniques
• Composting and nitrogen fixation techniques
• Potential of microorganisms
Additionally, the volunteer will train Dambal farmers on nursery techniques, plant handling during transplanting, and chemical management. Dambal farmers primarily grow fruit trees such as mango, cashew, and various citrus trees (orange and lemon). They also cultivate horticulture crops such as hot peppers, okra, eggplant, and onions.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct training sessions on agroecology and sustainable farming practices.
• Provide hands-on guidance on nursery management and plant transplanting.
• Educate farmers on safe and effective use of chemicals.
• Assist farmers in integrating livestock into their agricultural practices.
• Demonstrate water conservation and soil fertility techniques.
Qualifications:
• Master’s degree or higher in agriculture, agronomy, agroecology, agricultural education and training, or similar fields.
• Experience in horticulture and knowledge of agroecology.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• French language skills preferred but not mandatory.
