Micro-gardening Techniques and Technologies

Winrock International is seeking a skilled volunteer for an 18-day assignment, including travel and report writing, in January 2025. The volunteer will conduct practical micro-gardening training sessions for the Departmental Center for Assistance and Training for Women (CEDAF) in Nioro du Rip, Kaolack, Senegal. Working closely with CEDAF’s members, the volunteer will equip them with the knowledge and skills to establish and maintain micro-gardens using accessible, affordable, and sustainable materials. The training will promote environmentally friendly practices that enrich soil health and yield nutritious produce, contributing to household nutrition and potential income generation.
The training will cover a comprehensive range of theoretical and practical topics essential for effective micro-gardening, including:
• Micro-Garden Design and Organization: Instruction on setup, organization, and benefits of micro-gardens.
• Garden Preparation: Detailed guidance on creating growing boxes and tables, preparing solid substrates, cleaning, and dosing and mixing components.
• Plant Care: Techniques for nursery preparation, seeding, transplanting, spacing, and fertilizing crops on solid substrates.
• Composting and Bio-Pesticides: Hands-on training in composting and creating bio-pesticides with locally available ingredients, enabling participants to manage pests sustainably and naturally.
This training will empower CEDAF members to use eco-friendly techniques that improve soil fertility, reduce dependency on chemical inputs, and promote healthy crop production. Through this assignment, the volunteer will foster sustainable, community-based gardening skills that enhance both food security and economic resilience.
Qualifications and Background :
• Master’s degree or higher in agriculture, agronomy, agricultural education, and training, or similar fields
• Proven expertise in horticulture, micro-gardening, or sustainable agriculture.
• Strong practical experience in adult education, especially focusing on women’s empowerment.
• Ability to simplify complex agricultural practices for easy understanding and application.
• French language skills preferred but not mandatory; an interpreter will be available for translation.
This assignment offers a unique opportunity to support women’s agricultural initiatives in Senegal by equipping them with micro-gardening skills that promote environmental stewardship, increase resilience, and enable access to healthy food within their communities.
