Training on Improved Seed Production

Location: Kankan, Guinea

Assignment Number: GUI320

Volunteers Requested: 1

Recruiter: Jennifer Robinson | Jennifer.Robinson@winrock.org |

Winrock International is seeking a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer for a 17-day assignment (including travel) in Kankan, Guinea, to train members of the Federation of Yam and Sesame-Producing Unions and Cooperatives (FUCPIS-G) on improved yam seed production techniques.

FUCPIS-G represents the majority of yam and sesame producers in Upper Guinea, a region facing significant challenges due to the lack of high-quality yam seeds. FUCPIS-G has requested training in the Minisett technique, an innovative seed production method developed by the National Rootcrop Research Institute Umudike (NRCRI) to address this issue. This technique involves using small, chemically treated yam fragments (25–50 grams) to produce seedlings, offering a practical and scalable solution for yam seed production.

The volunteer will:

  • Build the capacity of FUCPIS-G members to adopt the Minisett technique, tailored to local conditions.
  • Provide practical, hands-on training to improve seed production efficiency and ensure sustainability.

This assignment will directly enhance yam production in the region by increasing access to quality seeds, boosting yields, and improving food security and incomes for FUCPIS-G members. This initiative will have long-term benefits for agricultural productivity in Upper Guinea by strengthening seed systems.

The volunteer should have the following qualifications and background:

·      University degree or higher in agriculture, seed production, or related topic or five years of seed production experience.

·       Experience in seed quality assurance during production and post-harvest.

·       Good written and verbal communication skills.

·       Experience in training and transferring hands-on knowledge to adults.

·       Ability to travel to a site about 600 km from Conakry by the project vehicle.

·       French language skills are a plus, but translation will be provided if necessary.
