UNICEF cites Winrock International’s work on girls’ education in South Sudan
UNICEF, the U.N. agency that works to protect the rights of children around the world, cited the work of a former Winrock project, the USAID-funded Gender Equity through Education (GEE) program in South Sudan, in a recent story on its website.
The UNICEF article, published on April 30, 2024, features four women drivers in South Sudan and references the Winrock project. It showcases how South Sudanese women have defied gender norms and expectations by being on the road.
Author Garang Abraham Malak writes: “Many girls in South Sudan are deprived of the opportunity to attend school, further perpetuating gender disparities in access to opportunities and decision-making spaces, according to [a] Winrock International 2015 report.”
Winrock implemented the GEE project in South Sudan from 2007 to 2012, working with local schools and education officials to deliver more than 9,500 scholarship packages ─ including over 8,000 to women and girls – across all 10 states of South Sudan. In addition to the GEE project, Winrock implemented USAID’s Room to Learn project in South Sudan, which helped nearly 139,000 female learners to enroll in primary school or equivalent non-school-based settings from 2013 to 2016.
