Training on Effective Agroecological Practices

Location: Dabola – Guinea

Assignment Number: GUI309

Volunteers Requested: 1

Recruiter: Jennifer Robinson | Jennifer.Robinson@winrock.org |

Winrock International requests the support of a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer for a 17-day volunteer assignment (including travel) located in Dabola – Guinea. The volunteer will train the representatives of the Union of Shea Butter Producer Groups of Dabola in Guinea (Union des Producteurs de Beurre de Karité de Dabola in French) in good agroecological practices. Given the importance of the Guinean agricultural sector to food security and its high vulnerability to climate hazards, agriculture represents one of the most suitable sectors for mainstreaming adaptation to climate change. Guinean agriculture remains underdeveloped, with challenges linked to climatic hazards, such as drought, underpinning farming activities, and the fishing and livestock sub-sectors remaining underdeveloped. The agricultural sector therefore offers great potential for expansion, taking adaptation into account, to strengthen food security. Without adequate understanding and implementation of agroecological practices, the Union may face challenges in optimizing productivity, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

Recognizing the importance of addressing this gap, the role of the Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer becomes necessary. The volunteer will empower participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools required to embrace and implement tailored agroecological techniques. By doing so, the volunteer efforts will catalyze a transformative shift towards sustainable and productive regional horticulture practices. This initiative benefits the immediate participants and holds the potential to create a meaningful effect, fostering broader adoption and impact across the agricultural landscape of upper Guinea.

The volunteer should have the following qualifications and background:

• University degree in agriculture, horticulture, agroecology, or related field.

• At least five years of experience implementing and managing agroecological practices in actual farming activities.

• Extensive experience in applied agricultural science supported by a solid academic and professional background and good networking and communication skills.

• Ability to develop and promote best organic/regenerative agricultural practices and value-added products in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive way.

• Experience in coaching farmers on the importance of protecting the environment.

• Proven international overseas experience (Africa, other developing countries) is desirable, as is a good understanding of the West African-specific environment in adult training facilitation skills.

• French language skills are preferred but not required. Winrock will provide a translator if needed.
