Training New Gardening Techniques

Winrock International seeks a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer for a 16-day assignment (including travel) in Porto Loko, Sierra Leone, focused on sustainable gardening techniques. The volunteer will work with members of SAP—KODA Farm (Selective Agricultural Practices Knowledge of Development Agency) to enhance their agricultural practices by assessing the organization’s current gardening methods and introducing advanced techniques to improve crop yields, sales, and income, especially during the dry season from November to April.

Responsibilities

· Assess SAP—KODA Farm’s current gardening methods and identify areas for improvement.

· Train technical staff and members on advanced gardening techniques to enhance crop yields.

· Provide guidance on planting calendars, disease and pest management, maintenance practices, and soil quality enhancement.

· Introduce eco-friendly fertilizer options such as wood ash, manure, compost, and dried blood.

· Teach propagation techniques for flowers and vegetables and methods to improve soil health for diverse crops.

· Foster sustainable agricultural practices that support environmental resilience and community prosperity.

Qualifications

· University degree in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field.

· Experience in vegetable production, preferably with crops like tomatoes, chili peppers, okra, and eggplant.

· Practical skills in plot management and knowledge of composting techniques adapted to the local context.

· Experience in training and/or coaching in vegetable production, with an ability to train adults preferred.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills.

· English and Krio language skills are a plus (translation will be provided if necessary).
