Training in Organic Fertilizer Production Techniques

Location: Macenta-Forest, Guinea

Assignment Number: GUI328

Volunteers Requested: 1

Recruiter: Jennifer Robinson | Jennifer.Robinson@winrock.org |

Winrock International seeks the support of a Farmer-to-Farmer (F2F) volunteer for a 17-day assignment, including travel, in Macenta-Forest, Guinea. The assignment focuses on training the technical staff and members of NAFROKONI, the Women’s Horticulture Cooperative of Macenta, in organic production techniques.

The training will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to implement organic agriculture, an integrated management system that enhances agroecosystem health, biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil activity. Participants will learn to prioritize natural inputs (minerals and plant products) while eliminating synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. This approach will strengthen their capacity to produce organic fertilizers and improve their horticultural practices.

NAFROKONI recognizes the need for technical expertise to expand its organic farming efforts. By adopting organic practices, the cooperative aims to enhance horticultural production while reaping the health benefits of organic farming. These include reduced exposure to harmful pesticides, better nutritional quality in produce (e.g., increased phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals), and long-term environmental sustainability. Organically grown foods contain phytochemicals with various health-promoting properties, including anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, cardioprotective, and immunoregulatory effects.

Volunteer Qualifications and Background
The ideal volunteer should possess the following:

·       A bachelor’s degree or higher in Organic Agriculture, Food Systems, or a related field.

·       Strong management skills and broad knowledge of environmental issues.

·       Ability to adapt strategies for emerging agricultural challenges, including climate change and market diversification.

·       Expertise in providing technological and methodological support for organic farming projects.

·       Strong written and oral communication skills.

·       Knowledge of the organic certification process and the gardening sector (preferred).

·       Physical ability to travel to the host site during the assignment.

·       French language skills (preferred but not required; interpreters will be provided).
