Agroecological Farming Techniques

Winrock International requests the support of a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer for a 17-day assignment (including travel) located in Thilogne, Matam region, Northern Senegal. The volunteer will help train the Multi-functional Platform Members of Thilogne on agroecological farming techniques, specifically soil structure and fertility improvement; use of natural fertilizers, good farming practices, how to positively and efficiently manage their space under cultivation to better control pests and diseases without harming the environment; and water use, management and conservation techniques, including composting, nitrogen fixation to develop an area of beneficial insects and potential of microorganisms.  

The training will empower the platform to implement agroecology farming techniques within its fenced-in farm lot with access to water. In addition, you will provide crucial information and build skills in nursery production, plot preparation, seedling transplanting, and the safe use of agrochemicals, thereby contributing significantly to the local community’s agricultural development. 

The volunteer should have the following qualifications and background: 

• Higher university degree in agriculture, agroecology, agricultural education and training, or similar fields

• Ten years’ experience in agroecological farming. 

• Good understanding of the agroecology context in developing countries.

• Experience in the field of horticulture.

• Ability to train women’s producer groups on agroecology using participatory methods.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• French language skills preferred but not mandatory. A translator will be provided.
