South Sudan
South Sudan is the world’s newest country and Winrock knows firsthand the growing pains its people have suffered, having worked in what was then southern Sudan, prior to independence in 2011. Remnants of a 20-year civil war still ravage the land and its people: 2 million displaced from their homes, rampant food insecurity, and a deficiency in education for children. Prior to 2011, Winrock worked to strengthen the capacity of local governments to provide services, sustainably increased access to water and sanitation, and trained farmers in improved crop production. Since independence, Winrock continues to work with the resilient and hopeful people of South Sudan to improve access to education, especially among girls, and eradicate illiteracy.
