Timothy May
Director of Communications
Timothy May, director of communications, is responsible for overall management of Winrock’s external corporate communications. He served previously as Winrock’s senior editorial manager, overseeing the development and production of impact stories and other content that highlights Winrock’s strategic goals and thought leadership across the portfolio. A former journalist with the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times and other media outlets, he has three decades of public service experience, including working as Winrock’s communications manager on USAID-funded projects in post-conflict environments in Africa and Asia. He has reported and written about agriculture and climate change, education, democracy and governance, human rights, community-led development and public-private partnerships. May previously worked as a researcher for a human rights organization in East Africa, and as a court-appointed special advocate for abused, neglected and abandoned children in the U.S. A native Virginian, he started his career working a summer job as a GS-4 clerk-typist in USAID’s Office of Afghanistan Affairs. He has bachelor’s degrees in international studies and English from the College of William & Mary in Virginia, and a master’s in journalism from Columbia University in New York.
