Peru
With a long coastline, a population highly dependent on agriculture and 70% of the world’s tropical glaciers, Peru’s government recognizes the threat climate change poses to its people and economy. Winrock has worked closely with the Peruvian government to catalyze private sector investments in climate resilience, focusing on infrastructure, agriculture and disaster preparedness. Winrock-led initiatives have helped develop understanding and capacity for implementation of nested jurisdictional Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) programs within Peru and other countries, and among project developers and commercial industry carbon offset purchasers. Additional Winrock engagement in Peru stretches back more than two decades and includes market-based support to smallholder farmers, as well as work with community-based organizations to develop and document best practices and projects that reduce child labor through education.
